You may like to consider stainless pistons in your stainless hydraulic calliper for improved performance.
Are Stainless Pistons Worth It?
Hydraulic oil and water are corrosive mixes. Some older callipers have factory pistons that are made out of Bakelite synthetics, such as phenolic resins. These have some anti-corrosion resistance, but this type of piston is subject to swelling, wear, and tear.
The movement of a phenolic piston creates minor scouring marks, which, as a result, swells the phenolic piston.
Eventually, the phenolic brake pistons will become sticky and fail.
316 Stainless Steel does not absorb moisture and is therefore not subject to swelling. 316 refers to a grade of stainless steel, which has great application in the marine industry. Stainless pistons do not rust and help give a maintenance-free solution to hydraulic piston use. Likewise, the sliding action of the stainless piston gives extended life over a standard piston.
If your boat trailer has these types of pistons, 316 stainless pistons are a great investment for improving longevity and allowing you to get back to what you enjoy.
