Made especially for our Ancient Redgum range by woodcarver and sculptor Gary Field, these stylised bird sculptures are inspired by our native Fairy Wrens. If you have ever had a pair of these, hopping and bouncing about your garden, you will no doubt be fans for life, so pretty and endearing are these tiny birds. Gary has used a combination of new Redgum with Ancient Redgum, the rich red of the first contrasting with the dense black of the latter, and mounted them on bases of Coolibah burl, another iconic Australian timber. Available in two variants with either the tail or body in Ancient Redgum, these little birds with their clean, uncluttered lines are a contemporary interpretation of traditional bird carvings. Packaged and accompanied by the Ancient Redgum story and a certificate of authenticity from the museum of Victoria, these little sculptures make a hard-to-beat Australian gift.
The Ancient Redgum story:
The fossilised Redgums that are used in our range are over 5,000 years old. These ancient Redgums were buried in the mud as the Murray river changed course at the end of the last Ice-Age. Over thousands of years, they became impregnated with minerals from the gravels of the river bed, transforming the timber into stunning black fossil wood. Extremely hard and dense, it polishes to a beautiful shine almost like stone.
