RILEY in the Rafters is a heartwarming, inspiring reading experience for adults and children alike.
(I have had at least as many adult readers as young readers. It truly moves the heart and soul.)
This story was inspired by a juvenile possum who lived in the rafters of an outdoor play space
at a school where I was teaching, We called him Riley.
Having just lost his mother, (to poisoning it was concluded),
and being almost ready to become independent, but not quite,
supporting him in situ was decided as the best option.
One day as I watched him sleeping, I wondered what he was dreaming.
Did he remember his mother? Was he missing her?
It was then that first words came to me:
'Down she came to him in a wisp of light,
and she whispered, his mother, she whispered to Riley,
into his ear, into his dreams.'
'Remember me , Riley. Honour me', she whispered.
'Look after you, my son. Honour you.'
So palpable was that feeling of love from her heart to his and his heart to hers
that I felt compelled to honour that love by sharing their story.
This beautiful picture book is in square format and illustrated photographically.
Also contains an appendix with some suggestions for caring for possums who share your garden.
