We all recognise the iconic green and gold kangaroo, but do you really know what the Australian Made logo means?
The Australian Made logo is Australia’s most recognised and trusted country-of-origin certification symbol. It’s recognised by 99% of Australians and used to identify products that have been manufactured in Australia.
Here are some common questions about the Australian Made logo, along with some myths that need to be debunked!
What is the Australian Made logo?
The Australian Made logo is a registered certification trademark that indicates the products carrying it have been made or grown in Australia.
It’s sometimes referred to as the ‘Australian Made, Australian Grown logo’ or the AMAG logo.
What does Australian Made actually mean?
A product can be described as Australian Made if it underwent its last ‘substantial transformation’ in Australia. The 'Australian made' claim refers to the production process, rather than the content of a product.
This means it must be fundamentally different in identity, nature, or essential character from all of its individual components, as a result of the manufacturing process that happened here in Australia.
Can the Australian Made logo be used on any product made in Australia?
No. The Australian Made logo is a registered certification trademark that can only be used on products licensed by the not-for-profit Australian Made Campaign Ltd (AMCL) and that meet the criteria set out in the Australian Consumer Law and the Code of Practice.
This is to make sure that the products are actually made in Australia – not just designed, assembled, or packaged here.
Are Australian Made products also Australian owned?
Not always. Products licensed to carry the Australian Made logo have been verified to be made in Australia - ownership is not considered.
Ownership is important to many Australians, and for that reason, many licensed businesses choose to use the green and gold kangaroo logo with the descriptor ‘Australian Made and Owned’. However, the logo cannot be used by companies that manufacture or import goods from overseas, even if they are Australian-owned.
What does the kangaroo logo on food products mean?
The logo found on Australian food products is slightly different. In 2016, the Federal Government introduced legislation requiring country-of-origin labelling on all food products for retail sale in Australia.
Most food products made or grown in Australia are required to use a special label that includes the logo and shows the percentage of Australian ingredients in the product.
For more information, see Food Labelling.
Why do companies have to pay to use the logo?
The logo is administered and promoted by Australian Made Campaign Ltd (AMCL), a not-for-profit organisation. Licence fees are used to manage and enforce correct use of the logo, to promote the logo and to promote the businesses licensed to use it.
How can I find Australian Made products?
The Australian Made website is an online directory that lists thousands of products certified to carry the Australian Made logo. You can search by product or company name, or by product category.
