AGL is proud to play a vital role in Australian communities, providing Australian Made electricity and gas to millions of homes and businesses across the nation.

The origins of AGL date back to 1837 (before the introduction of electricity to Australia), when the Australian Gas Light Company was first created with the responsibility to light the town of Sydney. Just a few years later, in 1841, Australia’s first gas lamp was lit on a Sydney street, enabling locals to enjoy late-night shopping for the first time and marking a shift in the way that Australians lived and worked.

Over the decades, AGL has continued to play a role in shaping iconic moments, including lighting the Olympic Torch at the 2000 Sydney Olympics (with the help of Cathy Freeman), and today powering the famous Skipping Vinegar Girl sign in Richmond, Victoria.

Over 185 years on from its creation, AGL now supplies energy to customers in all mainland states. With major electricity generation in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Gippsland in Victoria, and Torrens Island in South Australia, AGL has invested significantly in renewable energy – including wind, solar and hydroelectricity.

AGL’s Chief Marketing Officer, David Bland, said that AGL is focused on connecting Australians to a sustainable future and helping customers decarbonise the way they live. “As the energy landscape evolves and Australia moves toward a more sustainable future, AGL wants to be there for its customers,” he said.

Today, AGL provides services across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia, with local offices in each state.

“We know the importance of staying connected to the people who use our energy. Having offices in each state allows us to engage directly with the communities where we operate, which is one of the advantages of working with an Australian business providing Australian Made energy.”

By cultivating close relationships with its customer base, AGL knows what is important to Australians. “We are an Australian business, and we know that people value Australian products – even energy,” said David Bland. “To be certified Australian Made for our Electricity and Gas products, to carry the green and gold logo – that’s proof of that commitment, and it’s important to our customers.”

AGL’s connection to local communities goes beyond its offices, as the company is proud to support local industry and jobs. “We have over 4,000 staff in Australia,” said David. “We also engage the services of almost another 1,000 local regional contractors, and invest in the communities in which we operate, contributing $6 million per year.”

Operating Australia’s largest private electricity generation portfolio, AGL remains deeply focused on its purpose of ‘Powering Australian life’ through connection to local Australian communities, helping power millions of homes and businesses nationwide.
